Problems tend to be greatest during evenings and weekends, where the 'good' connection will last for just a few minutes. Do I just need to upgrade to a 'modern' modem? At 111 MHZ, the typical signal levels are 2.0 dBm, SNR up to 37 dB. Your SNR is very good @ 37.1 dB which means that youy don't have tool much noise/interference. http://performancepccanada.com/bit-error/bit-error-rate-and-data-rate-relation.php

These are synonymous terms. This time the connection was made at 129 MHz, and SNR just above 30 dB with occasional dips to just under 30 dB. It would never get anywhere near 0% at the rate it was doing this. When measuring the BER in a real system, what numbers do you "plug in" to the equation? (And which equation should you use?) I think I can figure out symbol time
This should provide about 10 errors, which is enough to make the calculation of BER have some significance. I just happened to have a tab open on the signal page and noticed the trend. We'll see how it goes from here. Bit Error Rate Calculator About 48 hours. (Jim Waschura, SyntheSys Research, Inc.) Bit error rate Isn't it supposed to be bit error rate?
Note that each point on the constellation represents a unique set of bits. Bit Error Rate Measurement Any three bit errors (BER of 3 x 10-6 or 3E-6) can be easily fixed by the RS decoder. So, RS decoder (t=8 – most common) is able to correct up to 8 symbols and 56 bits errors per codeword. That's why it didn't require any real smarts on my part to know that something wasn't quite kosher with his BER numbers. · actions · 2009-Mar-29 8:38 pm · TurbocpePremium Memberjoin:2001-12-22IA

The codeword looks at a bit error as anywhere from 1 to seven bits. Doesn't matter how many in the symbol are in error. A 'rate' is a specific type of 'ratio'. --184.108.40.206 (talk) 16:46, 11 September 2009 (UTC)Another way to look at it is that 'rate' usually implies a time-dependent function. i can't copy and paste because the page keeps refreshing by itself, but right now it says 561mhz, snr 38.7, signal strength 4.5dbmv, bit error rate 0.669%. In our transponder design, we don’t have to add a RS decoder. For example, if you have 1E-6 (one out of a million) BER, then test 10 million bits. If the BER is higher than typically expected for the system, it may indicate that a slower data rate would actually improve overall transmission time for a given amount of transmitted In my own experience, the lower data rates were almost a certainty when it was raining; evidently poor insulation somewhere in the telephone lines allowed enough current leakage between conductors, or
The best advice I can give you is to have a technician come out and check all connections and replace the modem. Six are parity symbols allowing for error correction. The problem statement and a brief theoretical description of linear modulation is given in the next section. I'll give a (hopefully final) update in a day or so. I have never heard the term bit error ratio.
