I moved the plastic spring loaded purge a few times and the problem did correct itself. Canon service said to either take to service center or have a refurbished unit sent. We will usually find a scrap of paper or some foreign object lodged in the purge unit preventing the proper movement of the purge unit. I don't see any accessible reset button and am ready to open it up. More about the author

Any clues? Exact same story for me with a new MP970. It was on the right side and visible/accessible when I'd moved the print head to the left and shone a light down into the right-side of the guts of the thing.
