I say just get it fixed professionally and don't look back. It's still under warranty but the camera shop charged us $25 just to ship it to Canon and now Canon wants $180 to repair it. "If the lens doesn't extend at all or it extends, and then retracts Then we tried to open it, but we found out that it was hopeless. I tapped with my finger all the corners of the camera and the side of the lens too. I took a picture of an owl, the next thing I know the lens is stuck out with lens error message. I had to quite forcefully push on the lens, but it did pop back in. It was fine after the fall, but the zoom was acting funny. Today I took some pictures without any problems, then two hours later this "Lens Error" appeared. I had a previous Powershot that also got them. Purchased extended warranty from Sears, but they sent it back to me and said because I had a scratch on the casing they wouldn't fix it. I have had my SD 1400 IS for less than 3 months and the lens stuck out.
To me, it was a combination of dust/dirt/who knows what else and discharged accus.
