Two weeks ago - immediately before departing on holiday to Ravenna in Italy, the camera developed the E18 fault. I searched the web and found this thread, and discovered that it was a lens error. This happens in auto focus and in manual - my preferred method of focus. I guess what I am getting at it is that it sounds as if you really want the SX230 and are just looking for further justification to warrant your decision. How do I restart the camera? what politics is it to sell such KNOWN crap??? SX230hs and no potentially considering the LX5 but with my SD850is and all the glowing reviews the S95 and SX230 have received, pretty much down to those two... Haven't used it in a while and just took it out yesterday and took some pictures. The idea is to get the sand out from between the lens barrels.

I sent the camera to the Canon Factory Service Center three or four times now...I am loosing track. worked great…my camera is an SD450 and it had an 8 on it by the motor instead of a 22 but it worked fine! This may jam the lens mechanism when it tries to close.
