At least now i don't have to buy a new camera. the springs on this model are different than what I saw on the article about the A1000. I contacted Canon and received the following answer: It has been confirmed that some PowerShot S100 digital cameras encounter a lens error caused by a disconnected part inside the camera.

I have a Sony Cyber Shot and was about 10 seconds away from buying a new camera till I saw your site. Works fine now!!!! But note that I DON'T recommend keeping the cable installed during Fix 6 as you may damage the AV port while tapping the camera. fixed!

If all of your experts are half as good, you have a great thing going here. Knowing how much the fix is, I decided to try to fix it myself. jdolly, I can try. I've owned several Canon's before but no luck getting any support from them after warranty is up. The lens will get stuck in the extended position, and refuse to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.
Yes I tried some light machine oil on my Coolpix L6, it didn't help. It's certainly better but there is still something sticking, gentle taps while the lens is trying to open seems to help it and I can now take pictures again, maybe it I also tried turning the camera on and holding down the shutter button but that did nothing. I have a Canon SD1000, that recently had a little bit of a different problem than most posts here.
