I have a Canon PowerShot A530 and I dropped it while I was taking a picture and it turned off. Powering the camera off and back on would reset the zoom, but only until zooming in again... I suspect I got some sand in the lens because the lens wouldn't close and just say 'lens error' and 'retry power on'.
