Thanks a lot!!!I tried most of the tips but the one that worked was pulling on the lens barrel while starting up the camera. I regret not doing this while on vacation because taking pictures was a real pain when the camera was busted. Next open the following link, and first read step 12! Cool.

Matias,As mentioned, these fixes only seem to work for less than half of lens errors. Who knows, you might get lucky. Reza says: I too just had the 'lens error, restart camera' message. Have updated the posting as suggested.
After trying the other suggestions on my Canon Powershot A570 IS I tried #7 by grabbing the lens during power on and not allowing it to retract. Turn off the camera and restart it to see if the lens error has gone away. Wakefield says: I have 850is and fixed it very easily .I would think that apiece of dirt or sand got into the barrel. Miraculous results, it worked and continues to work!
