I tried all the suggested fixes and finally got it to close by holding the "on" button down until the lens moved. Not too much. The lens stepper motor ribbon cable was partly pulled out of it's ribbon socket.
So I used the "Press gently on the lens" fix. Have vacuumed the extended lens, and it sounds much better. The SD1000 is a nice camera at a nice price. Even finnish CEO posted me a letter telling that I was the one to blame.

Then i switched on and and the camera worked normally. I'd say go for it, or it's bigger brother at about the same price, the A570 IS. This shouldn't have happened. This extra power can be useful in overcoming grit or sand particals that may be jamming the lens.
