I tried gently pushing the lens back in to no avail. But I noticed there was a small gap and the lens was actually crooked when I sat it down. Maybe the speck I saw on the barrel was the culprit. Your help in sharing will be appreciated, and karma will prevail! Afterwards, I turned it on and off and its working again for now... I sent it to a local Canon representative for warranty service, and received it back a couple of weeks later, fixed.
