WHAT GIVES! I tried point 4 on the "how to repair E18 error" ie pushing the lens gently where there is a gap. Removal of memory card triggers a reset in some digital cameras, so this might help fix your camera. It should be checked first.

I had to cycle the camera through a couple of cycles but this lens problem corrected with the installation of freshly charged batteries. Here is how the E18 error looks like. The camera now works. I am considering upgrading to a EOS 60D.
