Turned on camera and all is well! This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. But repair would involve opening up the camera and individually reseating each ribbon cable connector. While the power was still on and the lens was out, I simply (and gently) pushed down on the higher side. my review here trying to fix it, but no luck so far..... I had it fixed and just got it back on saturday. I've had two Sony's get a lens error in the past from nothing of me causing it and now one Canon that happened when we got home from the beach. I pulled the shell off (both back and front) and pulled the lens apart several times only to have the E18 NEVER go away.
Is the standard Canon 18-55 lens the same as 5 years ago? Look for any uneveness, and then gently try to straighten it by pulling pushing twisting as needed. Where is Canon to help us? I am very disappointed and to learn that it is a common problem ignored by Cannon disappoints me even further. Other variations include blowing with a hair dryer in "no heat" setting, or sucking the gaps with a vacuum (careful with this one). Maybe also consider using a small vacuum cleaner around these openings to draw the sand out.
I have had it for years without any problems. There's an article on the web if you do a search, Canon is rated at the top for performance and also first for reliability specifically naming lens errors on all the I guess it's because I have a silicone covering for the camera that while it protects it from scratches, it doesn't help with the dust particles. the last thing I did worked.Withe the camera turned on and the lens partially extended i turned it off while holding the lens to prevent it retracting.
