Trying that, the Catalyst Control Cetner install took abnormally longer than the others, and then it worked - CCC finally installed. I want to get the CCC running, but I'm not about to remove all these entries for fear of really screwing my system. I would suggest that if you did not set it to hidden personally then you should run a malware scan as some malware programs have been known to set the files this worked flawlessly.
So I uninstalled everything to do with AMD/ATI, ran driver sweeper and driver cleaner pro, then reinstalled the same Catalyst version I had before (11.11). I am on windows Vista x86. Ran Phyxion DriverSweeper 3.2.0 (http://phyxion.net/item/driver-sweeper-320.html) and selected AMD, cleaning all remaining AMD files and registry entries. I do not get an error message; just a brief hourglass, then nothing. I looked at the log on the firewall that is will my router since I unblocked CCC from the firewalls on my vista computer (windows and trend-micro). If it's in the GAC, any installer will NOT install a new DLL - it'll use the one in the GAC.
This worked for me, with 6.4 or 6.3 when CCC wouldn't come up. And no ATI DLL's have made it back into my GAC. The people who had success with the various fixes on this thread were fortunate. Presumably, this was due to the installer copying all the correct DLL's to my hard drive.
