Your tips and these from a commenter near top solved this problem. New Canon I kept getting 'memory card error'. one little trick that i discovered the hard way was that the play/camera switch shifted during repair. I fixed the lock switch with a drop of superglue and the problem was gone.
And I checked w/ 2 other computers as well. If so, it's still an easy fix. Also try reformatting the card again after doing the firmware update. This flat out worked for me!!!
